This was the first project we did for my Project Management class. We were put into groups and told to create a company logo, name, and what we do as a company. After we had that, we then had to create a brochure about ourselves. Our group began talking generally, introducing ourselves. We started off with our majors and what our interests were. Somewhere along the way the conversation came to creating planets, and as project manager I recognized that this was our niche. We had that perfect mix of creative and crazy.

In the context of the class, we wanted to use this project as a way to get to know each other, and the brochure was just the means to that end. That led us away from throwing resources at the mechanics of putting together the brochure, and let us be as creative/ridiculous as possible, spending most of our time in ideation and brand identity.

This proved to be the best idea and we were able to hammer out our ideas to the best they could be. Our discussion of creating planets branched off and became our company. We create planets. You want a planet with New Zealand mountains, Hawaii beaches, and beautiful redwood forests? We’ll make it for you. You want a fluffy marshmallow planet with orange penguins and watermelons that gush jello? We’ll make it for you. You want this planet exactly as it is, but without France? We’ll make it for you (honestly, we don’t have anything against France).

After long discussions and many poor doodles, we gave it the name Astro-Planetary Development (APD) and gave it a retro, fifties, Jetsons feel. What is outer-space without the levitating chairs and the needless floating ring doo-hickeys anyway? We then illustrated some quirky images, added some extra catchy tag lines, and put together a brochure—

“There’s no place like Xeorgon 6!”
“Home Sweet Celestial Home!”
“It’s not Science Fiction — It’s Science Non-Fiction!”
…you get the idea.

The way that we spent our time allowed us to get everything set into place; streamlining the
production side of things. We put together a presentation and presented our solid company,
as crazy and out there as we are.
